Children’s Root Canal In Windermere

Even when you take good care of your teeth and follow all the right dental hygiene practices, as dental experts at Parkview Kids Dental & Orthodontics in Windermere, we know that sometimes there’s decay that isn’t caught in time.

If your child has developed sudden, severe tooth pain, there’s a chance that they may need a pulpotomy. Here’s what’s involved.

What Is A Pulpotomy?

When your dentist determines a pulpotomy is required, they will access and remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth from its top or crown. The area will then be carefully cleaned and the tooth repaired.

Because the pulp inside your teeth is soft and full of nerves and blood vessels, when it becomes infected because of tooth decay, it can cause a lot of pain. If steps aren’t taken to stop the infection, this will worsen over time. A pulpotomy is one of the procedures dentists can use to remove the bacteria that is causing the infection and pain.

What’s The Difference Between A Pulpotomy And A Root Canal?

When your dentist does a root canal, they remove all of the pulp from the tooth. But when they do a pulpotomy, they only remove the affected pulp from the inside of the tooth. This is a less drastic type of procedure and works when the decay has not progressed too far.

How Can I Prevent The Need For A Pulpotomy?

Good dental hygiene is always the first step in keeping your teeth healthy. You need to brush after every meal, floss once a day, and use mouthwash to clean hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. You should also visit your dentist twice a year in order for them to assess your oral health and ensure that cavities aren’t forming and you aren’t exhibiting any causes for concern.

Most root canals and pulpotomies can be prevented if they are caught early enough. If your dentist catches a cavity before it makes it all the way to the pulp, it can be repaired as a normal cavity.

Pulpotomy After-Care

There may be some pain in the area of the pulpotomy after the procedure is done. Your dentist will probably recommend that you avoid hard foods for a few days after the treatment is complete.

Once you’ve recovered from the pulpotomy, you can brush and clean the area as you normally would.
